BARDO SEMINAR

Bardo seminar

Prof. Pasang Y. Arya

Bardo means mind in the intermediate state after death or when the consciousness has left the body. It is the state between the past life and the next coming life. The mind born in Bardo gets an illusory body, which is a mental body. It can go and reach anywhere any time without any obstacles like in dream. The maximum duration of the Bardo state is of 49 days and its minimum, a few seconds after the death. But, at any time during this state, the consciousness may get its new life under any form in one of the six realms as mentioned in Buddhism. It totally depends on the past lives' karma and especially on the karma earned in the previous life. In the Bardo life, after having discovered that one has died, one suffers from the non-acceptance of one’s own death and the attachment to oneself and family, friends, possessions, etc. These emotions are very important to the Bardo mind because negative emotions could lead to be reborn in the inferior realms. Therefore the Bardo introduction and training is very important for the mind to recognize his own self as in Bardo, then to accept and detach from the previous life, and search for the pure light to reach the higher realms. The ‘Tibetan Book of the Dead‘ explains in detail the Bardo hallucinations and experiences and introduces the self recognition of the illusory body and mind. The kusum-lamkhyer, ‘taking the three kayas into practice‘, is a daily life practice for the preparation of dying, Bardo and reincarnation in this very subject.

This two-day seminar on Bardo comprises the introduction and practice of Bardo meditation, with a visual presentation to support the understanding and meditation stages.
